Maharashtra To Get ₹1.6T Investment For Semiconductor Development

This India-Taiwan joint venture is under active consultation with the state government, aiming to generate massive employment and make India self-sufficient in electronics.

Vedanta Group, along with its partner, Taiwanese tech giant Foxconn, has proposed an investment of ₹1.6 trillion (approximately 20.8 billion USD) in Maharashtra. The funding will be used to develop a semiconductor and display fabs manufacturing unit in the state.

Akarsh K Hebbar, Global MD of Vedanta’s display and semiconductors arm Avanstrate, led the Vedanta team, in conjunction with Foxconn Chairman’s office team, to meet Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday to discuss their planned investment.

This venture aims to generate an estimated 200,000 direct and indirect jobs and is currently under discussion with the government of Maharashtra.

Due to its skilled workforce, proximity to ports, efficient domestic supply chains, and advanced industrial infrastructure, Talegaon in Pune has become a leading choice for Vedanta and Foxconn’s investment.

Global markets have heavily depended on a few countries for semiconductor and display fabrication, exposing vulnerabilities during supply chain disruptions during the pandemic.

In response to these risks and to enhance self-reliance, the Central Government has devised the strategy for Aatma-Nirbhar Bharat, emphasising domestic manufacturing of crucial semiconductors.

The state government has expressed confidence that this investment will foster the Centre’s mission of self-sufficiency and strengthen India’s electronic ecosystem.

In addition to the central government’s initiatives, Maharashtra has offered attractive incentives, fostering a robust electronics ecosystem. The state notably pioneered India’s Electronics and fabrication policy in 2016.

Commenting on the matter, the Chief Minister boasted about Maharashtra’s plan for a 10,000-acre hi-tech electronics manufacturing ecosystem in Pune, suggesting Vedanta and Foxconn could serve as anchor investors to create a new Silicon Valley.

Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis expressed Maharashtra’s suitability in terms of suitable industrial and logistical infrastructure for Vedanta and Foxconn’s semiconductor manufacturing operations, conveying gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Government of India for their backing.

He also affirmed the state’s commitment to achieving India’s $5 trillion goal and Maharashtra’s ambition of becoming a trillion-dollar economy through this massive project.

Earlier this year, Vedanta and Foxconn met with state leaders multiple times, with Vedanta visiting Talegaon in Pune, confirming it as an ideal location. During Foxconn Chairman Young Liu’s India visit, Maharashtra’s Industries department and MIDC engaged in discussions in Delhi.

The meeting also included the presence of Chief Secretary Manu Kumar Shrivastav, ACS to the Chief Minister Bhushan Gagrani, ACS Industries Baldev Singh, CEO of MIDC Dr. P Anbalagan, DC Industries Dr. Harshdeep Kamble, and Secretary to the Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Srikar Pardeshi.
