CIL Announces 3GW Solar Projects, Aims For 5GW RE Addition

CIL is laying the groundwork for its 5 GW renewable energy goal.

Coal India Limited (CIL) has announced its plans to set up 3 gigawatts (GW) of solar power projects as a part of its strategy to achieve a net-zero target by the fiscal year 2025-26. 

The company also intends to add an extra 2 GW of renewable energy to its portfolio, aiming for a total installed capacity of 5 GW to bolster its renewable energy footprint.

The state-run mining giant has detailed its initiatives in a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited for the development of a 1,190 MW solar power plant at a solar park in Bikaner, Rajasthan. CIL has committed to a 379 MW capacity across its subsidiaries with projects in various stages of implementation.

The company stated, “Work has been awarded for the execution of 379 MW SPV Solar Projects at MCL (50 MW), ECL (35 MW), NCL (50 MW), SECL (40 MW), WCL (15 MW), BCCL (25 MW & 20 MW), CCL (20 MW & 24 MW) & 100 MW Solar Plant for GUVNL. 180 MW of ground-mounted solar projects and 15 MW of rooftop solar projects will be commissioned in FY 23-24.”

CIL is also participating in PAN-India Solar tenders of GUVNL, SECI etc., to achieve the target of 5 GW.” CIL has entered into an MOU with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd to develop a Solar power project at Solar Park, in Bikaner, Rajasthan.

With the current commissioning of 43.20 MW of solar power and an additional 15 MW ofRenew rooftop solar projects slated for completion by FY24, CIL is laying the groundwork for its 5RE GW renewable energy goal.
