ByteDance Partners With Broadcom To Develop Advanced Chips

ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, is collaborating with U.S.-based chip designer Broadcom to develop an advanced AI processor, according to sources familiar with the matter. This strategic partnership aims to secure a stable supply of high-end chips amidst ongoing tensions between the United States and China. The proposed 5 nanometre chip, categorized as an application-specific integrated chip (ASIC), is specifically tailored to comply with U.S. export restrictions. Manufacturing of the chip will be outsourced to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), leveraging its expertise in advanced semiconductor fabrication.

Since the U.S. imposed stringent export controls on cutting-edge semiconductors in 2022, there have been no publicly announced collaborations involving Chinese and U.S. firms in 5nm or more advanced technologies. Typically, bilateral deals in this sector focus on less sophisticated technologies. The alliance between ByteDance and Broadcom, an established partner, not only aims to mitigate procurement costs but also ensures a consistent supply chain for premium semiconductor components.

Sources close to the development, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of semiconductor issues in China, highlight that this partnership could significantly bolster ByteDance’s capabilities in AI technology. By tapping into Broadcom’s expertise in chip design and TSMC’s manufacturing prowess, ByteDance aims to strengthen its position in the competitive landscape of AI-driven applications, including those integral to its TikTok platform.

The collaboration underscores ByteDance’s proactive approach to navigate geopolitical challenges and technological restrictions. By adhering to U.S. export regulations and leveraging trusted industry partnerships, ByteDance seeks to safeguard its operations and ensure uninterrupted access to critical semiconductor technologies. This strategic move not only addresses immediate supply chain concerns but also positions ByteDance to capitalize on advancements in AI and semiconductor innovation, essential for maintaining its competitive edge in global markets.

As developments unfold, ByteDance and Broadcom are expected to continue advancing their joint efforts towards developing and deploying the next generation of AI processors, potentially reshaping the landscape of AI technology integration in consumer-facing applications worldwide.
