BSES Plans To Light Homes With BESS Project

BSES Rajdhani, IndiGrid, and GEAPP collaborate on a utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project using advanced LFP technology to enhance grid stability and integrate renewable energy.

Power Distribution Company BSES Rajdhani, in collaboration with IndiGrid and GEAPP, launches a pioneering project in south Delhi to bolster grid stability and integrate renewable energy sources. Named the utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), this initiative employs advanced Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology to ensure consistent electricity supply, even during technical glitches or grid failures.

Located at the Kilokari substation, the project, approved by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), is set to be commissioned within 10-12 months. Initially focusing on the Kilokri area, it aims to extend its coverage later to benefit more residential zones, enhancing electricity supply reliability for a broader population.

The BESS operates as a crucial asset in generation, transmission, and distribution, pivoting in reducing network overloads and lowering power procurement costs. During off-peak hours, it charges using surplus or low-cost power and subsequently discharges during peak demand periods. This innovative approach reduces power purchase expenses and effectively integrates renewable energy sources into the grid.

Recent incidents, such as the power outage in east and south Delhi due to a substation fire in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat area, underscore the urgent need for reliable power solutions. The launch of India’s largest BESS by BSES signifies a significant stride towards achieving a dependable and efficient electricity supply. This state-of-the-art system is poised to provide uninterrupted power to residents within its coverage area, mitigating the impact of unforeseen events like substation failures.

By enhancing reliability and reducing power outages, BSES Rajdhani’s BESS sets a benchmark in the utility-scale energy storage systems field, paving the way for sustainable and resilient power infrastructure across the country.
