Wednesday, August 20, 2014: Telangana is going to have a better street lighting system soon, including five corporations, six municipalities and one nagar panchayat. This project will be implemented by the State government in collaboration with the Energy Efficiency Service Limited (EESL).

This company aims to implement more such energy efficient projects assisting ULBs and the government. During a review meeting last week, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, gave instructions to all the concerned bodies to implement energy conservation measures in ULBs of the state. Street lights in the state will be replaced by energy-efficient LED lighting system. The commissioner and director of municipal administration (CDMA) has decided that KCR’s orders and instructions will be implemented in select areas of the municipal corpoartions like Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Ramagundam, Warangal and Khammam.

Municipalities of Siddipet, Sircilla, Mahbubnagar, Manchiriyal, Nalgonda and Tandur are also going to be involved in this project. The Gajwel gram panchayat has also been selected as a project location. The project will be implemented in some phases. It’ll be spread across 12 ULBs and then they’ll be extended in all ULBs in the state. The municipal commissioner of the 12 ULBs will identify the area for project implementation. Based on the population for every area the number of street lights will be decided which need to be replaced. For a population of 0.1 million 150 lights will be set up, 200 lights for 0.23 million and 300 for more than 0.3 million.

The existing lamps will be replaced by energy efficient lights with 250 watts or less. Selected project areas will also have a separate electric meter which will monitor the consumption for a month and then a baseline will be decided.
